Jamie Severson, Graphic Designer

Thanks for joining us on WhatcomWorkflow, Jamie! What do you do for a living?

Graphic design/prepress in Lynden, but I live in Bellingham.

How long have you been a graphic designer?

12 years.

What’s a unique word or phrase that describes how you work?

Tell us about your desktop computer.

My PC is actually one I built using a Gigabyte motherboard. Windows 10, I5 3.3ghz, 16 gigs RAM, 4gb nvidia graphics.

What software applications do you use to get your work done and why?

Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat w/Pitstop plugin. Industry standard programs means efficient work between different computers and users.

What mobile phone and/or tablet do you own?

iPhone 5 and Lenovo Tab 2 A10.

What apps on your phone can’t you live without?

Plants vs Zombies, Facebook, Mail, Instagram.

Pop quiz: A distant relative sends you a check for a sizable amount. Their only request is that you use this money for creating your dream office workspace. How would you improve your current workspace and the technology you use?

What a great question! I would probably rent out my own office and create the ergonomic and comfortable work space I could. The best lighting, chair, desk, for optimal working conditions. I have found that long hours of working in even slightly subpar conditions just isn’t worth it over the course of months and years. The Varidesk Exec 40 is what i’d love to have for a standing/sitting desk :). I have a lower model at work but it’s not quite tall enough for my height.

Where is your favorite place to get work done in Whatcom County?

At home.

What are some struggles you are currently facing with your technology?

My iPhone battery is starting to crap out after a little less than 2 years. Disappointing!

What is your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?

Scripts in Acrobat-plugin, Pitstop! Fixing print problems in just a few clicks…saves hours!

Besides your phone and computer, what else (analog or digital) can’t you live without?

My guitar and water bottle! My Reverend BC-1 is a Billy Corgan signature model (Smashing Pumpkins singer/guitarist). It sounds so great and just the look of the guitar is inspiring enough to want to play it. For the water bottle, I’m all about the Nalgene small-mouth 32 oz. bottle.

What are you the best in the world at? Something that no one can take your crown away from you?

I’d never say I’m the best in the world at something but I am very passionate about music! It’s in my blood and has been ever since I was 12 years old. I hope to still be rockin when I’m in my twilight years.

What do you listen to while working, and what music source do you use?

I listen to all kinds of things while I’m working. I use Google Music.

What book are you currently reading?

One Church Many Tribes by Richard Twiss. Well…I haven’t started it yet but it’s next!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

All you have to decide is what to do with the time that’s given to us.” – JRR Tolkien
