Thanks for joining us on WhatcomWorkflow, Patti! What do you do for a living?
I am founder/marketing director at PR Consulting in Bellingham, WA. Small businesses around Whatcom County outsource social media management, blogging, branding projects and lots more to our team.
How long have you been at PR Consulting?
PR Consulting launched in 2006.
What’s a unique word or phrase that describes how you work?
Marketing tools keep evolving–I have to keep up or this business would quickly become irrelevant.
Tell us about your desktop computer.
I currently use a Dell Inspiron One that’s a couple years old. It’s an all-in-one model–I like how it doesn’t take up as much space on my desktop as a monitor/tower combo would. It came with touch screen functioning but I hated that. Who needs to reach out and touch a desktop monitor all day (bad ergonomics!). I downloaded Windows 10…and I like it. Is it OK to say that out loud?
What software applications do you use to get your work done and why?
On my desktop I use QuickBooks and the Microsoft Office Suite. I use a few other apps like Skitch, Color Cop and Dropbox.
What mobile phone and/or tablet do you own?
I use a Droid Turbo by Motorola to stay connected with my work world and friends/family.
What apps on your phone can’t you live without?
Oh, there are many! My homescreen has Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Starbucks (don’t judge me), Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts. The second screen has My Car Locator (hey, parking lots are big), Pandora, Pinterest, PaperKarma and Airbnb.
Pop quiz: A distant relative sends you a check for a sizable amount. Their only request is that you use this money for creating your dream office workspace. How would you improve your current workspace and the technology you use?
I would probably upgrade my desktop computer and then buy a desk that can go from sitting to standing at the flip of a switch….and I’d pay someone to set it all up for me, cause who has time for that?!
Where is your favorite place to get work done in Whatcom County?
My home office. It’s super quite, light and bright…the commute is great and it’s close to the coffee pot.
What are some struggles you are currently facing with your technology?
I would say filtering through all the options, knowing what I REALLY need as a small business owner…not being distracted by what’s bright, shiny and new just because it’s bright, shiny and new.
What is your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?
Delegate. If you want to grow your business, or do more as an individual you have to find trusted partners and delegate. I’m working through this lesson myself.
Besides your phone and computer, what else (analog or digital) can’t you live without?
I use a wireless headset so I can type and talk during phone consultations with PR Consulting clients…or listen to music while doing chores around the house.
What do you listen to while working, and what music source do you use?
We listen to Pandora via a Squeezebox internet radio device. It’s plugged into the office speaker system. We toggle through these stations: Bon Iver Radio, Motown Radio, Lite Rock Songwriters, Jack Johnson Radio and Today’s Adult Hits Radio. It’s harder to work on deep-thinking projects if we’re singing along, so sometimes we have to turn it off. 🙂
What book are you currently reading?
I go through spurts of reading books and I’m currently in a “not reading anything” spurt. Gotta fix that soon.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Be nice to everyone you meet because you just never know. You don’t know what they have been through, you don’t know how you might be able to help each other in the future, you don’t know what you might learn from them.
